I went into device manager and ticked 'show hidden items' which revealed my adapter, I tried uninstalling it to then scan for hardware but the scans just come back as if nothing was missing. I've rebooted twice, run 2 sfc scans in between (the window shuts straight away when it finishes therefore can't read any notification if any) but no dice. I then tethered using my phone but the plugged connection literally replaced the wifi adapter in my network options. I disabled the adapter but it would not re-enable (code 10). The computer was on all along and when I got to it in the morning the network was Limited, I turned airplane mode on/off, no networks were showing. Thanks.My network adapter has disappeared overnight. So any help with getting the wireless adapter to at least show up in the device manager would be very helpful. One computer is a Compaq Presario, the other is a Dell, and both are running the Windows XP Professional that I installed via CD.
I've also made sure that the wireless wasn't switched off via the switch on the keyboard. 'Wireless Zero Configuration' is also started and set to Automatic. I've also tried Start > Run > Services.msc, and 'Network Connections' is started and set to automatic already. I have tried clicking 'Scan for Hardware Changes' also, but nothing happens. And in the "Device Manager" window, under 'Network Adapters' the wireless network adapters don't show up: all that shows up is 'Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC". I've tried setting one up through the Wireless Installation Wizard, but nothing happens. When I enter the "Network Connections" folder, all that shows is a Local Area Connection - no wireless. So now I am able to boot both computers up and they run fine, but there is one problem: I can't get either of them to connect to the wireless network. From there, I was able to install Windows XP onto the computers. So, to solve this problem, I inserted a Windows XP Professional disk into each computer and booted from the disc. Both computers were malfunctioning: Every time I started the computers up, they would become stuck at a blue screen that said "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent further damage.".
